Curleys wife throughout Essay

In 1937, John Steinbeck wrote Of Mice and Men a novella about friendship during the Great Depression. The novella offers a unique and vivid insight into the lives of all social groups during the horrific collapse of the American economy. We’re given a comprehensive insight into the life of woman; a minority group in the American society. During the novella we only meet two women, Curley’s wife is one of them, a very naive young girl. In the novella, Steinbeck uses status to make us the reader feel compassionate towards Curley’s wife and the minority group of women. Curley’s wife has limited status and to some extent freedom on the ranch because she is a woman, a social minority. â€Å"Why can’t I talk to you? I never get to talk to nobody, I get awful lonely† Steinbeck uses Curley’s wife’s loneliness to make us the reader feel compassionate towards her as no one wants to participate in conversation with her. Candy regards her as â€Å"Jailbait† indicating she is a young female seeking to get men into trouble. Jailbait is slang for a minor who is younger than the legal age of consent for sexual activity, with the implication that an older person might find him or her sexually attractive. â€Å" I never get to talk to anyone† on the ranch there is a strong prejudice towards Curley’s wife, the men of the ranch have some very strong opinions however Candy is rather cruel about her throughout the novella and even when she is dead he verbally abuses her; â€Å"You god damn tramp, he said viciously† throughout the novella we have been aware of a bazaar tension between Curley’s wife and Candy, Candy and Curley’s wife are both regarded as a members of social minority groups. This relationship is perhaps very unequal because Candy is scared of the power Curley’s wife has. Her strength arises from her membership of being a female on the ranch, she has neither mental or physical strength but she has the ability to get Candy or any other ranch occupant lynched or sacked, which is possibly one of the reasons why he hates her. â€Å"Then-it’s all off? Candy said sulkily. † during this tragic time of Curley’s wife’s death, all Candy can think about is his and George’s agreement to buy their own ranch. â€Å"I get awful lonely† Steinbeck makes the reader develop a sympathetic feelings about Curley’s wife as no one wants to talk to her, her own husband doesn’t want to be with her and when he does conversation isn’t on his mind. Curley’s wife urges for attention and status on the ranch. Curley’s wife views herself higher than other people on the ranch, â€Å"they left all the weak ones here† Curley’s wife ironically insults herself by mistake during a dispute in Crook’s bedroom. â€Å"All the weak ones† the irony is that Curley’s wife is in essence calling herself weak. She views herself as an occupant of the ranch with high importance but in reality she is as weak if not weaker than anyone else on the ranch. Her lack of status is because she is a woman and acts in rather provocative way, whilst reading Of Mice and Men it is obvious that she carves attention. The use of the word â€Å"weak† is interesting as it means to lack the power to perform physically demanding tasks; having little physical or mental strength. This is ironic as she is an attention-seeking child. Steinbeck uses foreshadowing to make the book feel more like a piece of readable art. The effect of this in the novella is to make the book interact with emotions and thoughts; in some instances it can appear rather predictable but as enjoyable if not more than any other book. The effect on the reader is that they read on to see if their opinions and thoughts which were sparked by the effect of foreshadowing, are true. In chapter two we meet Curley’s wife for the first time, â€Å"both men glanced up, for the rectangle of sunshine in the doorway was cut off. A girl was standing there looking in† as the reader this is our first encounter with Curely’s wife, she is presented as a source of danger, but there is a deeper meaning to this. Steinbeck uses light as hope and it enters the bunkhouse until Curley’s wife stands in the doorway and blocks light from entering the bunkhouse. Immediately Curley’s wife is presented as trouble, this scenario is an example of foreshadowing. Curley’s wife dies because of her innocence, when we first meet her in the novella she appears in a rather innocent but provocative manner. â€Å" Her hair hung in little rolled clusters like sausages. She wore a cotton house dress and red mules, on the insteps oh which were little bouquets of red ostrich feathers. † She appears to dress much older than she really is. Steinbeck allowed us to know this by â€Å"A girl was standing there†¦Ã¢â‚¬ which indicates that she is quite young but dresses as an older lady which portrays to us the reader that she is really innocent and rather lost in a world she doesn’t quite understand. When we first meet her we see her as a rather flamboyant, confident young woman but towards the end of the novella her persona changes. Before Curley’s wife’s tragic death she confides in Lennie and we see her youth and innocence open up to Lennie. â€Å" He says he was gonna put me in the movies. Says I was a natural. Soon’s he got back to Hollywood he gonna write to me about it. † Curley’s wife opens up to Lennie about an experience she had with a man who worked in Hollywood, who promised her a career in the movies. Curley’s wife’s innocence and naivety were her own weapons of disaster. It was her innocence that sneakily leads her to her death but Steinbeck warned us about this cataclysmic event from our first introduction to Curley’s wife.

Bobbie Ann Mason-Shiloh- Setting Analysis Essay

â€Å"Shiloh† was written by Bobbie Ann Mason in 1982. The center of attraction of this narrative is a married couple, Leroy Moffitt and his wife, Norma Jean. During this story the characters are affected by their changing social rural Kentucky environment. In this time period, Kentucky transforms to a more suburb environment from their usual rural surroundings. Apart from their marriage changing with their social environment, so does their role of gender. Leroy and Norma Jean swaps traditional gender roles, which alters their marriage and leads to the breakdown of the Moffitts. The narrative is told from the perspective of Leroy Moffitt, a recent disabled truck driver. Although the injury leads him to sit home all day like a bored housewife, he pursues his hobby that is stereo typically feminine. He constructs craft objects from kits and sews needlepoint pillows, as a pleasurable interest. However, he dreams of building a log cabin for his wife from one of his craft kit model s, which symbolically portrays their marriage. The cabin is an unrealistic idea, and the project does not interest Norma Jean. Despite the fact that nothing dissuades him, he won’t let go of the idea of the cabin in the face of strong opposition that he won’t give up on his marriage in the face of clear evidence that his wife already has. Leroy sooner or later realizes that his marriage is as hollow as the boxy interior of their log cabin. Apart from Leroy’s lack of realization that his wife wants to adapt to her surroundings, and progress with her life, he is still stuck in the past and continues to pester his wife of living in an old log cabin. However, as Leroy builds craft kits and smokes marijuana all day, Norma Jean supports her and her husband by working at a Rexall drugstore. She eventually goes from a weightlifting class to a night composition class, reconstructing her mind and body and doing her best to adapt to change. In the meantime, Leroy resisting to do the same, is happy to be home and feels affectionate towards his wife, but he worries that she does not return these feelings. He wonders if his presence reminds her of their lost son, Randy, who died of sudden infant death syndrome. We have been informed that Leroy’s drug dealer, Stevie Hamilton, would of been the same age of Randy. This event tells the audience that Leroy refuses to move on from the past and continues to bring their marriage to an end. Consequently, the Moffitt’s gets one of their frequent visits from Mabel, the mother of Norma Jean and is constantly nagged by her to take a trip to Shiloh, a Civil War battlefield. This place is where Mabel and her late husband, Jet, spent their honeymoon and she thinks that such a trip will help them solve their marriage problems. After arriving at Shiloh, they see a log cabin, as Leroy expected. Close to the cemetery, they eat lunch. After they eat, Leroy smokes a joint, silence falls, and Norma Jean tells him that she wants to leave him. He suggests starting over, and she says they already did start over. After making her final decision, she travels down a serpentine brick path to begin her journey. Norma jean does not know where this path will lead her, but she knows that she is finally leaving. Leroy and Norma Jean are both victims of rapid social ch ange. Norma Jean was the most affected by her surroundings comparing to Leroy. Norma Jean had to marry at the age of eighteen to the man who got her pregnant, and in a cruel twist of fate, the child dies of sudden infant death syndrome. This event from her life prevents her to look towards the painful past. From the very beginning of the story, Norma Jean is portrayed as a woman continuously trying to better herself. She takes the opportunity of Leroy’s rehabilitation from his accident to start bodybuilding. After the bodybuilding class is over, she takes a composition class at night, and starts to cook more exotic food. Apart from Norma Jean’s efforts to self-improvement, Leroy refuses to move on from the past. While their surroundings are modernizing and changing to a more suburb area, Leroy continues to live in the past, such as living in an old log cabin. Leroy also relates the present to the previous, when he relates the doctor’s son to his own lost son. These two characters opposing each other, leads Norma Jean to her final decision of leaving her husband at the end of the story and the various aspects of her character revealing that desire. These aspects of her character were her devotion to progress in life, and her inability to communicate with her husband while he was still stuck in the past. The setting in the short story â€Å"Shiloh† by Bobbie Ann Mason works well to accentuate the theme of the story. The theme portrayed by the author is that most people change along with their environment, with the exception of the few who are unwilling to adapt, making it difficult for things such as marriage to work out successfully. As Norma Jean advances herself, their marriage ultimately collapses due to Leroy’s unwillingness to adapt with her and the changing environment. The author’s use of the difficulties of Norma Jean and Leroy’s adaptation to their changing environment, leaves the story to its central theme, change and transformation.

Management Strategies in Action Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 3000 words

Management Strategies in Action - Essay Example In most cases, the number of customers may be too many having different expectations, some of which may be contradictory to those of other customers. For example, some customers expect high mileage from an automobile, while others want more power. Another set of customers may want both mileage and power. The designer of the engine of the automobile has to satisfy the expectations of this whole group of customers in the best possible way. Customers have their own unique way of expressing their expectations, when enquired about. QFD helps to convert these expectations, called 'Voice Of Customers' (VOC), into engineering or technical requirement. In the example of automobiles, expectation of high power would technically mean generation of high torque by the engine, while expectation of high mileage would employ the technical need for a 4 stroke engine. QFD lets the designers know where their products or services stand vis--vis the competitors' products or services on the customer expect ation profile. QFD aids in objectively determining which technical requirement implemented would result in maximum possible satisfaction of most customers. Also it lets the designers know which technical requirements if neglected completely and not implemented, would not affect the satisfaction level of customers much. QFD emerged as a useful tool manufacturing but also in services set-ups. Quality Function Deployment (QFD) has been used in Japan since 1966 to help companies better understand how their customers define quality, and then assure that the internal operations such as design and manufacturing can actually deliver it. QFD has been widely practiced by various divisions of Japanese competitors of ours such as NEC [Akao 1990, Takada 1992, Uchimaru et al., 1993] and Panasonic [Akao 1990], and even European [Olsson 1993, Jacobs 1996] and American ones [Bosserman and Stoner 1994, Bohem and Squires 1995, Richardson and Barnard 1996, Stickel and Bosserman 1996]. There are references to the application of this technique during the 1970's at Mitsubishi Heavy industries, by Komatsu, Fuzi, Isuzu, Konica and Matsushita. Yogi Akao (1972), presently a professor at Asahi University. Yogi Akao has been credited with developing this technique to the present form. In 1987, the QFD research group of the Japanese society of quality control (JSQC) led by Akao published a final survey report on the status of QFD application among 80 Japanese companies (Akao et al., 1987; 1989). The companies surveyed listed the following as the purpose of using QFD: setting design quality and planned quality; benchmarking competitive products; new product development that sets the company apart from competitors; analyzing and accumulating market quality information ; communicating quality related information to later processes; deploying design intent into manufacturing & identifying control points for the GEMBA (a Japanese term that refers to the place where source infor mation can be learned); reducing initial quality problems, reducing design changes; cutting development time; reducing development costs & expanding the market share. In recent years, the more QFD-proficient of these companies have upgraded to Comprehensive QFD, which includes several tools to better analyze the Voice of the Customer, and more concise deployment matrices that address specific design requirements such as performance, function, technology, capability, as well as the components,

Elements of Success in Lloyds TSBs Total Rewards Programme Assignment

Elements of Success in Lloyds TSBs Total Rewards Programme - Assignment Example Online banking at Lloyds TSB offers a multitude of opportunities for customers, giving a more streamlined and much faster method of banking, which in turn facilitates an employee's ability to do his or her job. In the process of expansion, the company has combined with Xbridge, the UK's leading online business finance analyst to develop Lloyds TSB Commercial Finance, the biggest brand for commercial finance in the online medium. The most recent programme introduced within the company to improve business practices is called Total Reward, and its basic principles call for more than a financial package as an employee incentive. It calls for non-financial rewards such as the opportunity to develop skills and have input into the work schedule. What are the elements that make up Total Reward and how do they apply to Lloyds TSB Total Reward is defined as a programme that "brings learning and development together with aspects of the working environment into the benefit package" (CIPD, 2005). The concept is that when employees are included in organisational decisions, they will feel more connected and more responsible for improving the working environment. ... 2. Non-financial rewards, including recognition, opportunities to develop skills, upper-level opportunities and increased quality of work day. In Total Reward it is necessary to align HR and business needs with employee needs, acknowledging tangible and intangible rewards within the wider context of work experience. It is a new program, not fully embraced in the marketplace (CIPD, 2005). The concept is that when employees are included in organisational decisions, they will feel more connected and more responsible for improving the working environment. Because relatively few companies in the UK are successfully operating flexible benefits plans, there is no off-the-shelf package that companies can begin using immediately. The question here is the way in which Lloyds TSB is utilizing Total Rewards. What obstacles, if any, are they facing as they build a new programme for their company Management as a Balancing Act In today's employment market, a broader view of how to acquire and retain the best employees is no longer a matter of simply offering a competitive salary and benefits. A business that keeps up with current needs and new procedures has an advantage. Management has to know how to implement the employee pool in a way that creates harmony throughout the company (Hay Group, 2005). In addition, the public must feel that their interests are being addressed in the best possible way. This balancing act is difficult to achieve, but if the company is willing to learn from past mistakes and meet new challenges as they arise, a workable system can be achieved. Has Lloyds TSB Bank plc evolved in a way that will keep their organisation in a growth mode, keeping up with changes as they occur The ongoing debate is where to draw the line between personal

Creation stories - Essay Example He, therefore, separated light from the darkness naming the former day and the latter night. On the second day, God established the firmament through command and it became. He made it separate the waters from the waters and called the firmament Heaven (Giberson, 2012). On the same day, he collected the waters under the heaven into one place thereby creating the dry land and calling it earth, and the gathered waters as the sea. Moreover, God brought into existence the grass, trees, and other plant forms. In the third day, God created the sun, the moon, and stars to bring light on earth in the day and at night respectively. On the fourth day, God created water creatures such as whales, fish, and air creatures such as fowls. On the fifth day, God established every living creature on earth except human beings. These included cattle, creeping creatures, and beasts of the earth among others. Being pleased with his work, he blessed the creatures and made them multiply to fill the earth (Giberson, 2012). God completed his creation work on the sixth day by creating man in his own image. Therefore, God created man both male and female and thereafter blessed them and told them to multiply and feel the earth. Moreover, man was given power to rule and manage all creatures and use some of them as food (Giberson, 2012). On the seventh day, God rested on completing his creation work. Therefore, he blessed and sanctified the day since it was his day of rest from all the activities of creation. In the second part of creation, Genesis 2:4- 24, God who is referred by personal name as Yahweh, creates the first man in his image by using dust, breathes life into him thereafter becoming a living being (Giberson, 2012). God names his Adam and places him in the Garden of Eden to manage it. Thus, it is the man that God performs the life-giving act and not his earlier creations. Moreover, the man gives name to animals and even to Eve, whom he calls a woman since she comes from one

The likely implications of a large country engaging in loose monetary Essay - 1

The likely implications of a large country engaging in loose monetary policy for exchange rates - Essay Example Like any other economy in the world, certain internal and external factors move its exchange rates in the short term and long term. These range from inflation and interests rates, balance of payment, investors and traders confidence in Germany and fiscal health of the government among others. Loose monetary policy generates both positive and negative effects to the economy, where the later can be severe and may require protection interventions to regulate the economic behaviour Monetary policies are controlled by the federal governments through the Central Banks in the nations. Therefore, depending on how the economy is performing, the federal government would provide the guidance on the monetary policy (loose or tight) to adopt. On the other hand, fiscal monetary policy in an economy and the transmission of a shock from the broader economy (e.g. global crisis or US shock affecting the Euro) could affect and action of the government and eventually the monetary policy. Large countries have high population of people and due to their engagement in economic development and high international transactions with the rest of the world; they tend to affect the economic variables of other open foreign markets, more than the small countries. Open economies/ countries are those that participate in international trade or economic activities, facilitating some level of freedom in importation and exportation with other countries. Measuring openness is quite complicated and theoretically determined by the level of protectionism (e.g. tariffs) applied by the country. However it can be estimated through the trade to GDP ratio in a country. Small countries are more open than large countries; they have higher than 70 percent openness premium (shares of imports and exports in GDP) (Damijan et al, 2013, p. 4). The effect of the loose monetary policy in the domestic front of small countries tends to be similar to large countries and perhaps faster and severely. However, in the foreig n front, there would be a variance, especially in the international factor flow that is translated in the domestic capital market. This is because of the trade volatility and high degree of openness that make them more vulnerable to external shocks. Similarly, the shocks from the small countries tend to have negligible effect in the broader foreign market, hence on the receivers end. What would happen to the exchange rates in Germany in case of a loose monetary policy? German is the largest economy in Europe with an open but regulated market. It also shares a common currency (Euro) with rest of the nations in the European Union who accepted to the terms of currency union. This in fact reduces the chances of speculative attacks on the Germany currency. According to the Europecafe (2013), German stood at number 5 rank of the largest economies across the globe; the dominating European country in trade and especially in machinery export abroad. If German can opt for an expansionary mone tary policy, its real interest rates would decline, forcing Germany’s domestic capital and financial assets to have lower real rates of return. The basic principal here is that monetary policy affects finances through interest rates and ultimately the exchange rates. Domestic investment for Germany would hence reduce after some time, as the previous investors prefer to invest abroad in search

Engineering ethics - Assignment Example gained through studying, experience and practice is used to invent ways of utilizing economically the scarce materials and forces of nature to benefit mankind. It is therefore implicit that professional and ethical practices should be upheld to ensure public good is realized. In the recent engineers have failed to remain devoted to upholding high personal honour and professional integrity and accountability as they should in their practice. Despite the fact that their duties are clearly stated in all the phases of an engineering project and they are expected to concentrate on achieving goals set in their area of competence within the time allocated, there are complains of poor quality of work, failure to meet deadlines and failure to adhere by the governing rules especially about environmental conservation. This causes the society to doubt their professional integrity and accountability. Engineers are expected to be faithful to their employers and handle their clients’ information with confidentiality where necessary .It is ethical to be open to their colleagues and disclose anything that can affect their image directly or indirectly to their clients and society at large in order to uphold confidence in professional engineers. Society seeks engine ering services from those who show integrity and good citizenship. Regression [Use R program] Statistics Project Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Regression [Use R program] - Statistics Project Example There have been numerous studies that attempted to quantify the value people have placed on the quality of schools by analyzing the features and prices of houses that are around these schools in various districts. This paper is meant to study the factors that contribute to the sales prices of single family houses which are located within the school district in Goleta, Southern Santa Barbara in California. This research is applied, descriptive and it is developed from a quantitative point of view. The population of the study is formed by thirty six (36) home sales transactions recorded from the last three years. It represents a sample of possible sales and transactions that could be appearing in areas within the Goleta city. This data consists of six variables which are the price of a house in thousand dollars, number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, the size of the house, size of the lot and the year in which the house was built. Thus, the sales price is the dependent variable which is determined by the other variables in the data. The number of bedrooms, number of bathrooms, the size of the house, size of the lot and the year in which the house was built are the independent variables. In this research, regression analysis is used to accomplish the intended task. Various models are developed to determine the one which is the most appropriate in determining the sale price of houses within Goleta. The following models are considered: In this model, the number of bathrooms is dropped. It considers the number of bedrooms, size of the house, lot size and the year built. The codes used to obtain the summary of this model are as follows: This model considers the number of bathrooms, size of the house, the lot size and the year built as the only predictor variables. Thus, the number of bedrooms is dropped. The codes used to create this model are shown below: To identify the appropriate model, the analysis uses extra

A Comparative Analysis of 18th Century French and English Chairs Essay

A Comparative Analysis of 18th Century French and English Chairs - Essay Example These were heavily inspired by the reigns of kings Louis XIV, Louis XV and Louis XVI. Elsewhere in England, 18th century brought prosperity of unprecedented scale that led to a huge increase in the production of furniture with a distinctive English style. These styles are the Queen Anne style, Sheraton style and Chippendale style (Harwood, May and Sherman). The French chairs during this time were characterized by different leg styles. During King Louis 14th reign, French cabinet maker Andrà © chalets Boulle created revolutionary furniture that had legs which were figural, baluster and claw. Also, Louis 15th chairs retained the same leg formation of figural, baluster and claw. Furthermore, the Louis 15th rococo style chairs had a signature ‘S’ shaped cabriole leg, shaped like an animals hind legs. The chairs during King Louis the 16th however had straight fluted legs (Stevens). Meanwhile, the primary construction material that was used in Louis 14th chairs during the baroque period was wood from chestnut, walnut or oak. These were sometimes left natural or were painted bright colors such as red, green or coated silver and even gilded. In addition, precious woods and ebony were imported into Paris to be used as construction materials while pear and natural woods were used in the provinces. The finish often consisted of various metal and animal materials such as pewter and silver, along with tortoise- shell, horn and ivory (Clauston). Louis 15th rococo style chairs also used some of the material found in Louis 14th chairs including wood crafted from oak or walnut. In addition to oak and walnut, cherry, ash, plum, chestnut and olive were also used. Louis 16th neoclassical chairs used walnut, ash and burled. Other construction materials used include steel, copper and bronze (Clauston). The posture and form of the 18th century French chairs was varied. During the era of Louis 14th, the chairs had modest curves and straight lines were prominent (Stevens).

My Technologically Challenged Life Essay Example for Free

My Technologically Challenged Life Essay Monica’s parents play a huge role in limiting her access to technology. They choose to not use technology which I think is the main reason why they wouldn’t buy a computer for their daughters. Their reasoning sounds extremely familiar to me because my parents have done the same kind of thing to me. I begged my parents for a cell phone from seventh grade until my sophomore year when I finally bought my own but they would always tell me I don’t need a cell phone while my mom had one and my dad had THREE for his work. Anyways, I can relate to Monica on many levels. 2. I don’t think Monica is to blame for her technological difficulties at all. I think the main reason she is having troubles is her parents except for the lack of technology in her car which is obviously the manufacturers doing and not her parents. The lack of technology at the health-care facility is a pretty big issue if you ask me. The technology the workers could be and probably should be using would greatly improve the efficiency of the jobs they do. 3. Wunderlich’s reference to the weekend when terrorists were â€Å"supposed to be blowing up† the bridges in san Francisco was her way of adding some comedy to the story because there was probably a bomb threat that day and she could have potentially died simply because she didn’t have a GPS and got lost. If she had owned a GPS at the time, she wouldn’t have gotten so lost and never would have been on both of the bridges on accident.

Development of E-Recruitment Software

Development of E-Recruitment Software 3.7 Advantages Disadvantages of E-Recruitment There are many benefits both to the employers and the job seekers but the not also free from a few shortcomings. Some of the advantages and the disadvantages of e –Recruitment are as follows: Advantages of E-Recruitment (For the Proposed System) are: Lower costs to the organization. Also, posting jobs online is cheaper than advertising in the newspapers. No intermediaries. Reduction in the time for recruitment (over 60 percent of the hiring time). Facilitates the recruitment of right type of people with the required skills. Improved efficiency of recruitment Process Gives a 24*7 access to online collection of resumes. Online recruitment helps the organizations to weed out the unqualified candidates in an automated way. Recruitment websites also provide client companies with valuable data and information regarding the compensation offered by their competitors which helps the HR managers to take various HR decisions like promotions, salary trends in industry etc Disadvantages of E-Recruitment Apart from the earlier named benefits, e-recruitment has its own demerits/ disadvantages. Some of them are: Screening and checking the skill mapping and authenticity of millions of resumes is a problem and time consuming exercise for organizations. Internet access is yet to become a household need and not a want as there is still little or no awareness in many locations across Nigeria. In Nigeria, the employers and the employees still prefer a face-to-face interaction rather than sending e-mails. Other users can have access to the system provided he or she meets the pre condition Unacceptable changes can be made to any of the editable information details i.e. updating false records. Unauthorized staff are banned from getting access to the facility as the case may be ENTITY RELATIONSHIP DIAGRAM OF THE APPLICATION (ER DIAGRAM) DATABASE DESIGN FOR THE E-HIRING APPLICATION Chapter Four System DESIGN 4.1 System design is change from a user oriented document to programmers or data base personnel. The design is a solution on how to approach the creation of a new system. This is composed of several steps. It provides the understanding and procedural details necessary for implementing the system recommended in the feasibility study. Designing involves the logical and physical stages of development, logical designs reviews the present physical system, prepares input and output specification, details of implementation plan and prepare a logical design walkthrough. The database tables are designed by analyzing functions involved in the system and format of the fields is also designed. The fields in the database tables should define their role in the system. The unnecessary fields should be avoided because it affects the storage areas of the system. Then the design of the input and output screen should be made user friendly. The menu should be precise and compact. 4.2 ANALYSIS OF THE PROPOSED SYSTEM The newly designed system should improve the workability of the existing system. It would take care of the shortfalls i.e. problems encountered using the manual system of recruitment. It will have a self service module for the applicant’s registration. The proposed system will be user friendly which makes it easier, faster, and more reliable to use. For this project, the platform will have a web site which any user of internet can access. Once the applicants have registered they can send their details and the system will automatically store them in the respective fields. The user should be able to: Login to the system through the first page of application Centralize and automate administration of the application at the departmental level. Use self-service and self-guided services (applicants registration) Consolidate recruitment activities on a scalable web-based platform Support portability and standards Personalize content and enable exchange of applicants Manage applicants Handle applicant selection and sending of mails to successful applicants Display scores and transcripts 4.1 SOFTWARE DESIGN: ARCHITECTURE OF THE NEW SYSTEM In designing the software certain principles are followed: 1. Modularity and partitioning: Software is designed such that, each system should consist of a hierarchy of modules, partitioned to carry out specific functions. 2. Coupling: Modules should have little dependence on other modules of a system. 3. Cohesion: Modules should carry out a single processing function. 4. Shared use: Avoid duplication by allowing a single module to be called by others that need the function it provides. 4.2 PROCESS REQUIREMENTS USE-CASE MODELLING The main objective of constructing the requirements use-case model is to elicit and analyze requirements information which helps to prepare a model that communicates what is required from a user perspective but is free of specific details of how the system will be built and implemented. Cockburn, A (2001), notes that â€Å"a use case captures a contract, describes the system’s behavior under various conditions as the system responds to a request from one of its stakeholders†. In essence, a use case explains in a nut shell how a user (who can play a number of roles) interacts with the system under a specific set of circumstances. Pressman, S.R (2010), describes Use Case as how a user interacts with the system by defining the steps required to accomplish a specific goal. Using this approach will produce a more robust design that will be in three modules database, business logic and interface. The use of the waterfall system, RAD (rapid application development) with iterat ive and incremental development allows for the introduction of new requirements later in the project without seriously affecting the development of the final solution. The steps required to produce this model are the following: Identify business actors. Identify business requirement use cases. Construct use-case model diagram. Document business requirement use-case narratives. The project is expected to address the following areas:- Applicants Registration job category creation job Information Management Module shortlisted applicants Information Management Module The registration and management of the Company asset will contain the following unique information items: Name of applicants, Applicants details Application id, emails, discipline, job description grade ARCHITECTURE AND DESCRIPTION OF THE NEW SYSTEM Because the proposed system is web based and is going to be an ERP (enterprise Resource planning), application staff can Login at anywhere to gain access to the system. The graphical interface that would be adopted for this testing system is one whereby there is a comparison with the conventional login system where one user is permitted to login to the system at a time, multiple user login is impossible. The new system is more reliable and secure, and because it is a web based application, it can be deployed on the central server, where other work stations can be connected to it once they are on the network and users will be able to view the application. This explains the nature of the flexibility of the testing system to be developed. 4.5 INPUT DESIGN The applicant registration form will be designed such that it will include all information required about the staff job duties. The contents of this form will be similar to the hard copy form currently in use for staff appraisal A sample of some of the fields in the applicant Reg form interface is depicted below: CHAPTER FIVE: IMPLEMENTATION OF THE PROJECT 5.1 PROJECT IMPLEMENTATION OVERVIEW The development of the recruitment (E-hiring) system for the HR department of Visafone Company is made up of three layers namely: The Interface Layers. The Middle tier Layers(Business Logic) The Database Structure(Housing the database tables and stored procedures) This n tier approach to the construction, design and implementation of the project is to ensure that the application is stable and consistent such that any changes on any of the layers will not affect the other layers. For instance, if the database is changed from Microsoft SQL to Oracle, all that needs to be done is a change in connection and not a change in the entire three tier application. The key called â€Å"HR† (located between the two ) is the connection string while the key â€Å"SMTP† is the server configuration that connects to the internal mail server to send mails. A Class (Human.cs) was created as a container for all the methods that will be used by the application because the concepts of object oriented programming was used. 5.1.1 HARDWARE Windows 7 operating system Visual studio embedded on Windows 7 operating system for development Laptop 60GB HDD 2GB RAM 5.1.2 SOFTWARE Visual studio 2010 C# programming language SQL 2008 server as back end database Microsoft Visio 2007 5.2IMPLEMENTATION PROCEDURE Implementation of the web based recruitment application (E-HIRING system) went through many stages which are: 5.2.1 Database Construction After the installation of Microsoft SQL 2008 server, a new database named HRManagement was created using the SQL Enterprise Manager. The database was constructed using the flowchart designed in the previous chapter such that columns and table attributes needed for the application were created. The following tables and their corresponding parameters were created for this database. tbl_vaccancy tbl_HR tbl_Applicant tbl_ApplicantRegistration tbl_event tbl_department tbl_interviewer tbl_RegisterUser tbl_AllRequest 5.2.2 Web server Configuration To configure the web server, Microsoft Internet Information Service (IIS) was installed on the machine to be used for hosting the web pages to be accessed. This is done by: Click Start – Click Control Panel – Click Add/Remove Program – Click Add/Remove Windows Component – Check Internet Information Service – Insert Windows XP CD – Click Next – Click Finish and Reboot the machine. Click Start – Right Click My Computer and Select Manage – Click Services and Application – Expand the Internet Information Services Icon – Expand Web sites – Right Click Default Web Site – Click on Properties and configure the parameters. 5.2.3Business layer Creation and Referencing After the installation of Microsoft Visual Studio 2003, the business layer (which has to do with the business logic behind the research project) was created using the namespace FIRSBusinessLayer and the Visual Studio application gives us the Microsoft.ApplicationBlock.Data which is used for the connection to the database. In order to make them usable, they were referenced in the application by doing the following: Start Visual Studio – Click on HRManagement – Click View and select Solution Explorer (which opens at the side of the page) – Right-click References under HRManagement and click Add Reference which opens the Add Reference box. Click on Projects button – double click the FIRSBusinessLayer and click ok to add the reference as shown below: Also double click on the Microsoft.ApplicationBlocks.data and click ok to reference it. A screenshot of the created methods and properties is shown below: 5.2.4Creation of Interfaces These were created as modules to give the various methods the expected parameters. Visual Studio was used for designing the interfaces using the control toolbox which consists of textbox, image, buttons and labels. The following interfaces were created and viewed using Windows Explorer: CHANGEPASSWORD.aspx createApplicant.aspx CreateChannelmanager.aspx RegisterUsers.aspx setupInterviewers.aspx aboutus.aspx AllallocatedApplicant.aspx AllRegsisteredApplicant.aspx StaffLogin.aspx careers.aspx HOME.aspx HRADminframe.aspx HRlogin.aspx HRmanagement.aspx HRrespond.aspx listofjobsforRRespondr.aspx RecoverPassword.aspx StaffLogin.aspx Under Set up folder createApplicant.aspx createDepartment.aspx createHRstaff.aspx CreateVacancy.aspx StaffLogin.aspx SearchAndRequstForApplicant.aspx SearchAndRequstForvaccancy.aspx SearchAndRequstForvaccancyByVcancyNo.aspx StatusOfApllicant.aspx 5.2.5Debugging the Application The debugging tool is used essentially for testing the application to see if the three tiers (i.e. the database structure, middle tier and Interface) are properly connected. The debugging tool was used severally to see if the application can compile, many errors were displayed and break points were created at suspected sources of error and they were corrected accordingly. To confirm that the application is error free, the following was done: Open the Project in Visual Studio (i.e. HRManagement in this case) and Click Build solution on the Build button. After successful compilation, it will show â€Å"Build Succeed, 0 Skipped, 0 failed†. See screenshot below: Home.aspx is configured as the start up page for the application and all pages are linked back to the main site by clicking the HOME button on page. To run the application, Click on the Debug button and Click Start, this opens the main site through the browser. 5.3 SYSTEM REQUIREMENTS In order to effectively run this application, the required minimum hardware specifications are: Processor Speed: Pentium V, 1.4GHZ RAM Size: 512MB A USB port or CD Drive Display Settings: 1024X768 pixels Operating System: Windows XP, Windows 2000 or 2003 Server 5.5USER GUIDE/MANUAL This application is to be used by three groups of people namely: Registered users: These are registered users e.g. staff, interviewers, HR assistant, Admin. etc they can request, check Applicant status, and subsequently view and allocate applicants once they have been properly authenticated by the system. The Administrator manages the software application. He performs administrative tasks such as configuring the application to automatically send mails to selected applicants generate summarized reports and create personnel. He can also Create HR Managers, Create Registered Users and Create Interviewers etc. HR personnel: These are also the soul of the software they can see all Applicants application on the system, they can also authorize/select, delete, hire, they can also create other users in the system, can close vacancy, create applicant, create interviewers and allocate interviews. Applicants: This is the person that applies for a vacancy or one that has chosen to apply into the various jobs vacancies advertised. He uses the application by applying for the various openings, and when applied a reference number is generated .With the reference number he/she can check the status of its application .i.e. hired, rejected and if vacancy is still available. Once he has submitted its application into the system, he/she can also edit some of its profile. CHAPTER SIX: CONCLUSION AND RECOMMENDATIONS 6.1 ACHIEVEMENTS The following were achieved by the project: Uncover savings through business process improvement and support for strategic decision making Gained control of the Recruitment process Increased accountability to ensure compliance Enhanced performance of assets and the life cycle management Risk reduction through standardization and tracking, proper documentation, loss of records ,detection of employees records Align IT with business goals to support business decisions 6.2 LIMITATIONS AND CONSTRAINTS The limitations encountered in the course of this project are as follows: Because this project has to do with recruitments, the various security measures put in place by other companies visited and this made it difficult to get more information. No company wants to divulge its security information i.e. personnel records Limited materials available to specifically address the project goals Limited time to develop the application Lack of enough programming skills to come up with something better than this in terms of project delivery 6.3 AREAS OF FUTURE DEVELOPMENT While I believe a great work has been done in the development of an e-hiring recruitment processing systems for the HR department, the following still needs to be addressed: The system should be integrated with an SMS alert system using a third party provider system The application needs to be tested by so many users to ascertain its durability It database needs to be upgraded to SQL 2008 full version The system should provide high level-based approval process in order to improve security and hasten requisition process. It should provide capabilities to aid IT infrastructure staff knowing what IT assets they have, where they are and their status. Provide an avenue for easy IT Asset movement and assignment. An encryption algorithm was not used for the database as it’s not designed for commercial use and resident only on my system for project purposes. However the research work is open to further development by whoever deems it fit. 6.4 RECOMMENDATIONS Due to the deficiencies of the current method and the need to improve the method, there is a need for a web based recruitment processing system, that reduces or totally eliminates paper involvement, providing accurate inventory status report, ease decision making, and provides an avenue where by each IT asset can be tracked, assigned and re-assigned. 6.5 CONCLUSION It is expected that the E-hiring (Recruitment) system should help to increase productivity to the organization through sourcing for qualified job seekers. It should help eliminate the burden of space that is needed to store the hard copies of Cvs. Thus, different organizations (governmental and nongovernmental) are expected for source for candidates through the online requirement system. ORS should be the determinants of recruitment due to its benefits which has astounding advantages.

Soviet Union Breakup :: essays research papers

The Breakup of The Soviet Union  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚     Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In this essay I am going to talk about the breakup of the Soviet Union and all of the events that took place before, during, and after the split up. I will look into the C.I.S (Commonwealth of Independent States), the Government, economy and the conflicts of the former U.S.S.R.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In July of 1991, President Mikhail Gorbachev and ten other Repulic leaders all met and signed a treaty giving each Republic more self-government. Five more leaders were to sign the treaty on August 20, but on the 19th of the month Communist leaders, led by Boris Yeltsin planned a coup against Gorbachev's Government. They trapped him and his family in their vacation home but he refused to give in to the demands. While this was going on, protesters held demonstrations and strikes broke out all over the country. The Commuist party was suspended in many republics, including the Russian Federation. A few days after the coup, Gorbacev resigned from the party leadership.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In September 1991 an interim government was set up until a new treaty could be worked out . This government included Gorbachev and the leaders of the other Republics.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  On December 8th Russia proclaimed itself the Soviet Union's successor. Boris Yeltsin and the Presidents of Ukraine and Belarus announced the formation of the Commonwealth of Independent States and that the U.S.S.R had no longer existed. The Commonwealth of Independent States was an association of nations that were formerly republics of the Soviet Union. They encouraged all others to join with them. On December 21, eleven republics joined, Armenia, Belarus. Azerbaijan, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyztan, Moldova, Russia, Tajistan, Turkmenistan, Ukraine, and Uzbekistan. Georgia became a member in 1993. The headquarters were located in Minsk, Belarus. Only three republics have yet to join, they are Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The C.I.S was created for several reasons, the economies of the former republics were closely linked and most members wanted to keep some economic ties, each member also wanted to guarantee its own territory and Sovereinty, the members also sought to reassure the world that the nuclear weapons of the former Soviet Union were under reliable control. The C.I.S was created to help out new and developing countries.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Although everything seemed to be all right, they did dispute some matters, they originally only wanted to have one military between all republics but it was changed and each had its own, Russia and Ukraine argued over who owned the Black Sea Fleet, another problem was that most of the members wanted to change the currency from the Ruble so each had to create its own.

To Be Legal :: essays research papers

To Be Legal   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Marijuana smokers are generally mildly intoxicated, giggle, laugh, bother no one, and have a good time. They do not stagger or fall, and wouldn’t ordinarily attempt to harm anyone. It has not been proven that smoking marijuana leads to crimes of a violent nature or to crimes of a sexual nature. Smoking marijuana has no unpleasant after-affects, no dependence is developed on the drug, and the practice can easily be stopped at any time. So why is marijuana illegal? Although marijuana usage is frowned upon by society, marijuana can be used for industrial, recreational, and even medical purposes.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  The industry could certainly benefit from marijuana. Hemp (processed marijuana) is among the oldest of industries on the planet, going back more than 10,000 years to the beginning of pottery. Surprisingly, Hemp can replace many of the elements used in products today. One acre of hemp in annual rotation will produce as much pulp for paper as 4.1 acres of trees during the same twenty-year period. Hemp can be grown and harvested every year, unlike trees that take a lasting fifty to one hundred years to grow back. Also, making paper from trees creates over five times more pollution than making paper from hemp. Hemp could also have an effect on the clothing industry producing three times as much fiber per acre as cotton. While cotton is grown on only 3% of the world’s farmland, it uses a devastating 26% of the world’s pesticides per year. Hemp requires no pesticides or herbicides to grow.   Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  In regards to recreational use, marijuana is about as benign as you can get. It is not addictive. It does not cause violence. It creates no hangovers and no one has ever died from an overdose. Marijuana serves as a natural relaxant, unlike alcohol, which produces more hyper emotions. Personally, I noticed that people attending college parties based around the consumption of alcohol tend to be more aggressive than those under the influence of marijuana. Marijuana users tend to be more jovial in a social atmosphere such as a party/club and do not pursue things that involve large amounts of energy. Although there are some that claim marijuana usage is harmful to the body, impairing the normal flow of thought, causing loss of coordination, and even brain damage, it can also be a way of enjoying yourself, socializing with friends, and escaping the troubled reality of the world.

Postcolonial Indian Literature in English: Narayan, Jhabvala, Rushdie :: Essays Papers

Postcolonial Indian Literature in English: Narayan, Jhabvala, Rushdie Indian literature in English which is accessible to us in the West, still has its roots in colonial literature and the tensions between East and West. A European naturalism is often present; a concern to posit India as an arena within which Western readers can identify realities is inherent within much of this writing. The following are three examples of the progression of post-Independence literature. Twenty years after Independence, R.K.Narayan was still tackling issues of colonialism. The Vendor of Sweets (1967) takes us through the tensions integral to a family in which two generations belong to two different cultures. Ascetic Jagan belongs to an old India of family and history ;his son to an India increasingly subject to the foregrounding of the commodity and a dramatic industrialisation. Narayan explores the inevitable clash of what is, in many ways, both a colonial and a post-colonial encounter: Jagan, a follower of Gandhi and a veteran of the wars against British Imperialism, must attempt a negotiation of an ethos invasive to his own definitions of nationality; Mali, without this structure, must reconcile an American capitalism with India's own sense of what constitutes a modern nation. This theme is continued in Ruth Prawer Jhabvala's Heat and Dust (1975). Again two generations, this time British, must come to terms with an alien culture. Whilst Olivia's adventures are romanticised, Jhabvala attempts to explore in a more sophisticated manner the social outlay of Anglo-Indian relations with the higher Muslim classes and Olivia's step-grand-daughter is confronted with an India that remains hidden in the works of Kipling, Forster or Narayan. Leelavati the beggar-woman's life, if not her behaviour, demonstrates an unusual social awareness of the lowest castes. It is to be noted that the East-West dichotomy within the later generation has become less strained: modern Britain is expected now to accept India on its own terms. Salman Rushdie, whose work has been produced in the eighties and nineties, has removed himself from the sites of both nationality and naturalism but remains in an engagement with economic colonialism and its consequences.

Adult Learning Today Essay

Summary Adult learning has become the number one priority in everyone’s lives. The motivation and drive that is brought on by dreams and goals is phenomenal. Adult learners must be motivated to want to further their education. â€Å"Back in the 20th century various individuals, such as John Dewey, Eduard Lindeman, and Martha Anderson all pursued theories about Andragogy which was first used by Alexander Kapp in 1833† (Abela J, 2009). Andragogy means man and was used to describe the educational theory of the Greek philosopher Plato. Adults engaging in continuing education were studied in this theory. Andragogy assumes that â€Å"adults are independent, have various experiences, are motivated by internal drives, and integrate their learning into everyday life† (Abela J, 2009). It is easier to learn and teach when it is something that is well known. This article covers Andragogy learning theory because it is used now a day more than ever. The drive that keeps continuing education is oneself. The drive to motivation is based off of the Hierarchy of needs: self-actualization, esteem needs, social needs, safety needs, and physiological needs. The role of educators is the catalyst for motivation. It is easier to learn when the person teaching is knowledgeable and cares about the education aspects. However, reflection and motivation are insufficiently addressed by this concept. Learning activities should address the knowledge, skills, and attitudes to what is needed to become knowledgeable in retaining the information. Feedback when learning new information becomes an important role so that one may know whether the information is being comprehended as well as being retained for further use. Adults find motivation within the demands and desires of their lives, in providing for themselves and for their families, and in satisfying personal dreams and ambitions. Motivation may also come from inside a person or the surrounding environment. In everyday life as well as in the work aspects furthering education is the best way to stay up to date. Andragogy is a great theory and is used in everyday life more than realized. Reflection By looking into the reasoning behind all my motivation there are the answers I have always tried to find. What am I working towards? For who? I am an adult learner and motivation is key to my life and what I want out of it. Motivation is my drive to furthering my own education. Andragogy actually describes me perfectly. I am motivated, independent, and I apply all my knowledge to everyday life. It helps greatly when professors and educators actually work with you and help you better understand the information being taught versus just being a â€Å"teacher† for the money. I feel as if teachers online especially have lost sight of the education aspects. Left out from the summary Andragogy is a popular theory used in medical education. Theory works perfectly into my life even though I am a Business major; I also have the drive to help the elderly, so I am a certified nursing assistant. My professors have been there for me and helped me greatly. My learning style is independent much like Andragogy but, I also have to apply everything I learn into everyday life or I won’t be able to retain all the information given. Motivation is the key to anything you want to achieve in life and motivation is what keeps me going during the long work weeks and the long school hours. If one concept doesn’t work then move onto another concept until the learning style clicks. In this article the medical field and this adult learning theory works exceptionally well. Although this may be just another theory, it is of great importance to the adult learners furthering their education. We can better understand the world around us and how things are done if we understand how to retain the information given. As a full-time student, young mom, and full-time worker, online education has been more than helpful. It is my motivation to finish my associates, then finish out with my bachelors, and move forward to the next steps in my life. They say, â€Å"You can’t teach an old dog new tricks†, teach things the first time and use all concepts needed and you will soon achieve life goals. By furthering your education you may open up doors and opportunities you would not have gotten if you had not decided to go to school. Education is the best decision you could make for yourself as well as to make the world a better place by being educated. Works Cited Abela, J. (2009). The Last Castle

The movie The Last fort provides manakins of good attractership and bad leaders. Colonel Winter, the warden of a military is the example of bad leadership, go General Irwin, a prisoner at Winters prison is an example of good leadership. The film illustrates that a leader does non have to have a technical leadership position to get into followers, and how two leaders who have differing viewpoints on leadership cannot exist in the uniform space without conflict. Henri Nouwen, in his book on leadership In the Name of Jesus, says power offers an easy substitute for the hard labour of lovemakingeasier to control people than love people. In The Last Castle, we see the note of Irwins and Winters leadership styles in regards to the prisoners. Winter constantly reads the inmates files or so the crimes they committed in revisal to instigate himself that they are capable of violence and so he will not always feel compassion for them. He is practical and takes no interest into th eir personal feelings, and he refuses to ever recognize how they could change over time. Irwin, on the other hand, chooses to ignore the inmates pasts and focuses on who they are in the present. He recognizes that no matter what they have done, they have a good side as well. In addition, Irwin treats the inmates as men, instead of treating them like cloddish children. In the film, Irwin takes interest in a prisoner named Aguilar. Aguilar is not well wish because he is Hispanic. In addition, he has a speech impediment so others recollect he is dumb. He has no assumption but when Irwin starts treating him like a soldier, and not like a worthless man, he gains his impudence. Irwin recognizes that Aguilar is smart and knows masonry so he puts Aguilar in charge of building the w every(prenominal).Since Irwin treated Aguilar like a man and a soldier, Aguilar gained confidence and was able to himself become the leader of the skirt-building project. In building the wall, the prisoners were building themselves a synecdochical castle to protect themselves from the unfair practices of Winter. Irwin inspires the men to build the wall to be something that is their own. Irwin suggests that they all work together in order to build a better, stronger wall. Building the wall was something the prisoners did on their own, without the directive of the warden.
